I am interested in national conflicts where two groups are partly trapped in their conflict by the rival histories they tell about it. The Israel-Palestine conflict is particularly striking in this way. My Simone Weil lecture Uprootedness, Narratives and Conflict is about this. I was severely criticised for this lecture by an Israeli philosopher in an e-mail which started an email correspondence, which was quite interesting. My critic raised serious doubts about whether Simone Weil was a good person to cite in discussing these issues with Israelis.
